Star of Luther and king of cool Idris Elba has the internet in meltdown as he confirmed he has returned to the character.
It’s been more than two years since series five of Luther came to an end, with it seemingly not set to return in the normal fashion after showrunner Neil Cross said series six wasn’t happening.
But it was later revealed that a film version was on the cards, with Idris now blessing us with a very welcome update.
The actor shared a pair of pictures on his social media page, which he simply captioned: ‘Oi……I’m back!’
The location was tagged as ‘on set’ in the two images, one of which showed a picture of a clapperboard and the other, a snippet of Idris’ signature smart costume.
Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo will be joining Idris in the upcoming film, which will be directed by Jamie Payne, who worked on series five of the show.
Speaking previously to Australia’s Insider magazine, Neil was quick to dismiss the idea of series six as he didn’t want to keep ‘churning it out like sausages.’
But he was instead keen on the idea of a film, saying: ‘But Idris, Jamie Payne [director], and I will shortly have some exciting news to share. There’s gonna be more later, but it’s not going to be season six.’
The film was confirmed earlier this year, which will be produced by the streaming service in association with the BBC, with Neil also producing alongside Idris.
Idris, 49, previously said of the upcoming spin-off: ‘I’m so excited about it, it’s been a long time coming. We’re very, very close to pulling the green light on the production.

‘Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the 90s like Seven and Along Came A Spider.
‘I think what we’d like to attempt is use that as a blueprint to create it. It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther.
‘Essentially we just want to try and take it to a much bigger remit and scale and perhaps international as well.’
Described by Netflix as ‘an epic continuation of the Luther saga reimagined for film’, the project will reportedly see Luther faced with two new challenges.
