Supergirl star Melissa Benoist marked the end of an era on Tuesday after the final episode of the hit series aired.

Indeed, the past few weeks saw fans enjoying the very last season of her action-packed show, in which she stars as the titular character.

Taking to Instagram to pay an emotional tribute alongside a picture of herself hugging co-star Chyler Leigh, the 33-year-old wrote: ‘happy finale-ing to all tonight, from the Danvers sisters’ couch to yours. ♥️

‘thank you to every incredible person who ever played a part, however big or small, in making this show tick. ♥️’

She continued: ‘we accomplished so much and I’m so proud of all of us. thanks most of all to each and every one of you who saw us through and watched to the very end. hope you love how our story ends.’

Chyler commented: ‘Love of my life…’

In September last year, it was announced that the popular show would be drawing to a close with its sixth and final season.

At the time Melissa promised fans that they wouldn’t be disappointed with the conclusion.

In a statement, she said: ‘To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless.

‘She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united.

‘What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful.’
