What to watch this week: From Disney Plus specials to a witty French comedy

Everything you need to take note of on the box this week

Wondering what new telly to fill your week with?

From an Italian crime series with a refreshing feminist streak, to a day of specials from Disney Plus, a new wildlife series with starry voiceovers, and a French comedy series criminally overlooked on its first release, there’s a lot to unpack.

Acorn TV

Voiceless

Italian crime dramas have long been dominated by the long shadows cast by the Mafia and led by craggy-faced, world-weary chaps — yes, that’s you, Montalbano — but women are belatedly breaking down the walls of this male-dominated world.

Following in the tracks of Thou Shalt Not Kill’s Valeria Ferro, we have a new female detective to celebrate in the form of Eva Cantini, played with downbeat intensity by Cristiana Capotondi.

As Eva investigates the disappearance of a model she’s confronted by misogyny on an epic scale.

Disney Plus Day

Netflix recently held a fan day and, not to be outdone, Disney is getting in on the act with Disney Plus Day, an event clearly aimed at keeping subscribers hooked by premiering a host of new content.

A Star Wars special (above) celebrating Boba Fett and Marvel’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings — pick up, darn you — are the key attractions along with teasers for new shows.

It all happens on Friday.

Netflix

Animal

Are they starting to run out of titles for wildlife series?

Animal seems prosaic but at least you get some impressive cinematography in this nature series, which focuses on the idea of family values as interpreted by lions, kangaroos, octopuses and more.

An impressive line-up of narrators, including Rebel Wilson and Bryan Cranston, give it their beast shot.

Available from today.

Mythomaniac

Marina Hands plays a mother whose lie is about to catch up with her. (Picture: AMAZON)

If you need to foreign up your Netflix algorithm un peu, then catch up with this French comedy drama that, somewhat unfairly, practically no one watched first time around.

It centres on struggling wife and mother Elvira (Marina Hands), who tells a big lie — and it’s a whopper — to get herself out of a tight hole.

That was essentially the first series and now Elvira’s lie is out there so where to go with the second series?

That’s right, Elvira has to make amends — but when you’re as slippery with the truth as she is, it won’t be easy.
