Son of a nutcracker, Will Ferrell’s Elf costume has just been sold for the price of a house.

The festive costume worn by Ferrell in the 2003 Christmas classic was auctioned off by Prop Store Entertainment Memorabilia on Tuesday, and it was expected to fetch between £20,000 and £30,000.

However, it seems that somebody with a particular affinity for Buddy the Elf really wanted to get their hands on the costume.

The full costume was sold for £175,000 at the London auction to a mystery buyer – nearly 10 times the expected price.

The buyer is now the proud owner of the dark green tunic, yellow tights, matching hat and curled black shoes, as worn by Buddy as he made his way from the North Pole to New York City and made by Carelli Costumes in New York.

The costume was sold as part of a mammoth three-day auction of movie and television memorabilia, with over a thousand items left to bid on over the next two days.

The remaining lots include Walter White and Jesse Pinkman’s gas masks from Breaking Bad, Christian Bale’s personal script from Batman Begins, Robbie Coltrane’s chair from the set of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Danny DeVito’s prosthetic hands from Batman Returns.

But whether any of them will reach the lofty price of Buddy’s outfit remains to be seen.

Items that sold for more on the first day of the auction included Marty McFly’s hoverboard from Back To The Future Part II, autographed by Michael J Fox (£300,000), Wilson the ball from Castaway (£230,000), a miniature of the ILM X-wing from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (£190,000), Russell Crowe’s arena helmet from Gladiator (£180,000), and Anakin Skywalker’s belt lightsaber from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (£180,000).

However, the costume attracted more money than Freddy Krueger’s razor finger glove (£80,000), Val Kilmer’s Batsuit from Batman Forever (£75,000), and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man costume from Spider-Man 3 (£130,000).

Elf has become a staple of the holiday season since its release nearly 20 years ago, and tells the story of a human raised by elves who leaves the North Pole in search of his father.

While it was a huge success, it’s highly doubtful we’ll ever see a sequel, as Ferrell turned down a staggering $29million (£21m) offer to make a second movie.

The 54-year-old told the Hollywood Reporter: ‘‘I would have had to promote the movie from an honest place, which would’ve been, like, “Oh no, it’s not good. I just couldn’t turn down that much money.”

‘I thought, “Can I actually say those words? I don’t think I can, so I guess I can’t do the movie.”’
