All You Need to Know About the 2021 WTA Finals Ranking Points Distribution System

The 2021 WTA Finals have finally begun at Guadalajara, Mexico. The competition is taking place at the hard outdoor courts with the top 8 players from WTA Race. Moreover, the points distribution system at this year-end showcase is also quite interesting.

With Ashleigh Barty’s withdrawal, the competition will witness Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova, Iga Swiatek, Paula Badosa, Barbora Krejcikova, Maria Sakkari, Garbine Muguruza, and Anett Kontaveit in the singles event. Subsequently, the top 8 players from the doubles rankings will also compete at the megaevent.

WTA Finals points distribution system

The top 8 female players are giving their best in Mexico with Karolina Pliskova and Anett Kontaveit starting their campaign with wins. Notably, the points distribution system for the WTA Finals is also very intriguing.

Starting with the round-robin loss, a player will earn 125 points if she losses in the round-robin. Subsequently, a player will be grabbing 250 points on winning the round-robin match.  The player reaching the semi-finals of the competition will take all the points earned in the previous matches.

Coming to the final match of the 2021 WTA Finals, the runner-up will receive the points earned in the previous matches plus 330 points. However, the winner will receive an add-on of 750 points along with points earned in the earlier matches. All the points gained by the players will be efficiently added to the WTA Rankings.

In short, an undefeated champion would earn a maximum of 1500 points. This points system is the same for both singles and doubles events. Certainly, 1500 points would push a huge change in the rankings if a player manages to earn it.

Prize money of the competition

The prize money for the 2021 WTA Finals is US $5,000,000.  Notably, there has been a drastic change in the prize money from the last edition of the WTA Finals in 2019. Unfortunately, the competition got canceled in the year 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tournament purse in the year 2019 was a huge amount of US $14,000,000. There has been a drop of US $9,000,000 in the amount of the prize money that will be divided among the 8 players according to their performances in the tournament.

Ashleigh Barty is the current defending champion of the WTA Finals. However, she has withdrawn from the mega event in Mexico. Moreover, she is presently enjoying her family time in her home country Australia.
