‘Trust in Cus’: Floyd Patterson’s Legendary Advice to Mike Tyson

In the mid-1980s, the sport of boxing saw a heavyweight star emerge in Mike Tyson. ‘Iron’ Mike, in the retro era, became an overnight sensation with his prolific power and knockout abilities. Also, he had an unusual boxing style, through which he hammered dozens of opponents. Tyson’s then-coach, Cus D’Amato, is rightly regarded for instilling this iconic fighting style in him.

D’Amato broke to fame when he guided Floyd Patterson to his heavyweight win back in 1956. However, D’Amato was in search of another star, who he later got in ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’.

A few days back, a video emerged on the internet, wherein Patterson, alongside D’Amato, guided Tyson

He said, “Well, I would say that have faith, confidence, and mainly trust in Cus. He knows what he’s doing. There’re many times that I doubted him in his decisions. But I only regretted it afterwards.”

Tyson took this advice seriously, and he only learned from D’Amato as a true disciple. What followed later was not short of magic. Tyson debuted in the sport in 1985 and he only went ahead to keep on adding T/KO wins to his name.

While Tyson was tracing his shot to glory, he suffered a major setback when D’Amato died in 1985. However, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ honored him by winning the heavyweight belt a year later.

D’Amato knew what Tyson had in himself when he first met him. That said, the legendary coach only channelized Tyson’s mindset and power, which later helped him become the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.

Back when he won this title, Tyson was just 20. Hence, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history. This is a record he still holds.
