Angela Black: Will there be a second series of the ITV drama?

One of the most gripping ITV series of the year is set to reach its conclusion, with the final episode of Angela Black airing on Sunday. 

The dark drama has captivated viewers since arriving last month, tackling tough subject like domestic abuse and mental illness.

It follows Angela (Joanne Froggatt), a woman with a seemingly idyllic home life and charismatic husband Olivier (played by Michiel Huisman). It’s not long though before the viewer discovers that not all is as it seems. 

The sixth and final episode of the first series is upon us – but will there be any more?

Sadly, it looks like there won’t be new episodes of Angela Black coming to our screens any time soon.

While ITV has yet to confirm possible news of a second series, star Joanne Froggatt has outright denied the notion of new episodes – stating that the show was always meant to come to an end after six episodes. 

When asked by Metro.co.uk and other gathered press whether we could expect a second series, the actress replied: ‘No, this is a one and only six part series.’

She added: ‘It’s a really intense psychological thriller. I think by the time we go through those six episodes, we get a very satisfying conclusion. You don’t need to revisit, I think we’ll all have been through enough shocks and surprises and twists and turns.’

Joanne went on to say: ‘So yeah, it was very much meant just as one story.’

Writers Jack and Harry Williams are behind the series, and previously discussed how they spoke with staff in shelters, as well as consultants, to make sure that their series reflected the true experiences of those whose lives are impacted.

Detailing their work behind the scenes, Jack told ITV: ‘I think the key thing is that this is something that happens a lot, but people do not always understand or read about it.

‘I think it is very easy to watch shows about abuse and go, “Well… I’d just leave”. It is not as simple.’

‘It was important that we do it justice and that we were accurate about the psychology of the abused and the abuser, both sides of the story,’ Harry added. ‘It was important to try and be truthful with it.’
