Matteo Berrettini’s Announcement Benefits Daniil Medvedev at ATP Finals 2021

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has had a tremendous 2021 season. The Russian grabbed his first Grand Slam title this year, defeating Novak Djokovic at the US Open. At the moment, he is busy competing in the ATP Finals. The World No. 2 player has begun things according to his liking, winning his opening two group stage matches.

Sadly, Matteo Berrettini, who was in the same group, withdrew from the tournament due to an injury he suffered during his opening round match. However, Matteo’s withdrawal is good news for Daniil.

Daniil Medvedev moves to the semi-finals of ATP Finals

Due to these developments, the Russian powerhouse has booked his place in the semi-final. Reflecting on his performances so far, Daniil won his first match against Hurkacz. Berrettini will be replaced by fellow Italian, Jannik Sinner, but the 20-year-old will have a very difficult path to qualification for the semi-finals.

He was down a set, but managed to fight back and claim the next two sets against the Pole. Following that, he was up against German sensation Alexander Zverev. It was one of the closest matches this season and the fate of the match could have been tilted in either player’s favor.

The World No. 2 player got off to a brilliant start, taking the first set in a convincing manner. Soon after, Zverev raised his levels and the winner of the set had to be decided in a tiebreaker, which the German ended up winning, sending the match into the final set.

The third and final set too went into a tiebreaker. However, it was Medvedev who stood his ground and won the tiebreaker 8-6, which indicates clearly how close that contest was.

After booking a spot in the semifinal, it will be interesting to see who he will face in the next match. We wish him all the best for the upcoming matches and the remainder of the season.
