Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Mexican Boxer Will Fight Ilunga Makabu in May 2022
Canelo Alvarez just keeps wanting to make history. Days after creating history at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, he has his eyes set on his next target. Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso revealed the ‘undisputed’ super-middleweight champ’s next fight. Alvarez will chase boxing immortality as he goes after the title of five-division world champion.
The WBC held a convention in Mexico City to discuss all things boxing.
During that discussion, they gave Canelo the green light to challenge the WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu. “I know … what he has done with the heavyweights he spars with, and that is why we asked for the fight,” Reynoso told ESPN Deportes’ Salvador Rodriguez.
Canelo Alvarez’s trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso has announced at the WBC convention that Canelo wants to move up to CRUISERWEIGHT and challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu in his next fight in May. The WBC have approved this, so Canelo will fight to become a five-weight champion.

“We know that [Makabu] is strong, but Canelo can beat him. … Many may say that it is crazy, but they also said that it was crazy when Canelo was junior middleweight champion, and we were looking for middleweights, super middleweight, light heavyweights. I have a lot of confidence in Canelo. He is very strong and has many qualities, and I know that he is going to win that fight.”

Canelo has never fought in Cruiserweight. Hence, his trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso had to petition the WBC to order the title fight. Now that the WBC has approved the fight, negotiations for it will begin. If the two sides do not reach an agreement, they will set up a purse bid for the rights to the fight.
