Longtime WBC Challenger Dillian Whyte Fails to Secure Fight Against Tyson Fury

Dillian Whyte could not secure his title shot against Tyson Fury. Whyte looked to fight Otto Wallin on 30 October. However, as the Brit pulled out because of injury, the next logical fight for him was the long-awaited title shot against the champion Fury.

The WBC has now sensationally failed to give Whyte his title shot. The governing body held a convention in Mexico, and the next big heavyweight scrap was hot on the agenda.

Whyte’s relationship with the WBC is not on the best of terms currently. The Brit has been very vocal about the WBC constantly overlooking him.

Whyte held the mandatory position for 1,000 days during ‘The Bronze Bomber’s reign as the WBC king. He then lost the position in a shock KO loss to Alexander Povetkin. Whyte avenged that fight to reclaim his position as the mandatory challenger.

Now the WBC, headed by Mauricio Sulaiman, has decided to let an independent arbitrator look into the matter of the mandatory position.

So it may take months for Tyson Fury to get his next fight against the mandatory WBC challenger. With Fury himself uncertain about his future in boxing, it will be interesting to see how this story turns out after the WBC plays out all their cards.

The Tyson Fury saga

Fury beat Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight, labeled the fight of the decade. After an impressive win over his American counterpart, Fury looked to get back his lost title of unified heavyweight champion. The Brit vs Brit showdown between Fury and Anthony ‘AJ’ Joshua would have been a massive fight for all the laurels.

However, that fight is off as Joshua lost his belts to Oleksandr Usyk on September 25. As Joshua invoked his rematch clause, Fury only had the option of fighting the mandatory. Given the WBC’s decision, that may not be a straightforward thing.
