Nick Knowles has shared what he thinks of Rhod Gilbert replacing him as the host of DIY SOS for the Children In Need special, emphasising that the programme ‘really is about the kids’.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Nick, 59, who has been the face of the programme since 1999, had been replaced for the charity special, with comedian Rhod, 53, temporarily taking the reins.
The news came after the former Real Rescues star appeared in a 30-second Shreddies commercial as a builder helping a family.
Amid fears that the TV presenter could lose his role on the home makeover show due to a potential violation of the BBC’s rules, he managed to come to an agreement with the broadcaster that he couldn’t appear on the show until 2022.
For DIY SOS viewers used to watching Nick as the host for the past 22 years, it may have initially felt unusual for another presenter to take his place.
Nonetheless, Rhod received high praise for his stint on the show from viewers, with Nick also applauding him for being ‘emotionally engaged’.
In a tweet shared on Tuesday night when DIY SOS: Big Build for Children In Need aired, Nick described his replacement as a ‘lovely chap’.
‘Rhod is a lovely chap, was properly emotionally engaged, did a great job and it really is about the kids and raising funds for @BBCCiN,’ he said.
Responding to those calling for his return, he added: ‘I appreciate people being loyal to me but I really urge you all to support this build and Rhod and donate if you can.’
In a second tweet, Nick thanked ‘all the tradesmen, volunteers and importantly the suppliers’ who made the charity special a reality, as well as ‘Rhod Gilbert for doing such a top job and being so emotionally engaged @DiysosBilly @chrisandjules @Bonjourmillar also director Matt Skilton & team credit to all involved’.
Viewers enthusiastically commended the DIY SOS: Big Build for Children In Need special, as well as Rhod’s performance as host.
