Serena Williams Admits of Being ‘Underestimated and Underpaid’ During Her Tennis Career

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has inspired generations with a tennis racquet in her hand. However, she is now steadily becoming the inspiration in the business world with her venture capital firm, Serena Ventures. It begs the question: What is so different about her company?

Notably, Serena invests in early-stage start-up companies that improve daily living and better the world. So far, she has a portfolio of 50+ companies with a $33 billion market cap. But most importantly, these start-up companies are 60% diverse founder investments.

Simply put, the 40-year-old American provides much-needed financial support to “the dreamers and the visionaries of the future.” And that is how Serena is transforming the venture capital industry.

“My firm, Serena Ventures, invests in early-stage entrepreneurs who often pitch us with just a vision,” Williams said. “When thinking through what role I wanted to play as an investor, funding early-stage ventures was a no-brainer. I look to support the dreamers and the visionaries of the future, while giving them the opportunity to capitalize on their genius.”

Moreover, Serena added that she had been underestimated and underpaid throughout her career. Hence, it became the foundation for her to aid those who don’t get the opportunities.

Besides her venture capital firm, Serena also has a fashion line and a jewelry line. Both the companies comply with sustainability and pave the way to the future.

Serena’s 2021 tennis season

Tennis-wise, Serena had a disappointing 2021 season. Although she started impressively, reaching the Australian Open semifinals, she couldn’t continue the form.

Accordingly, the tennis queen registered a 12-5 win-loss record, including a French Open R4 loss. Following this, Serena looked confident for Wimbledon but had to retire from her first match due to a knee injury.

Afterward, the former World No.1 did not play a single tournament this year. However, she has recovered and is looking forward to competing at the Australian Open next year.
