Floyd Mayweather on Canelo Alvarez: “There’s So Many Other Great Fighters”

Canelo Alvarez put on the performance of his life against Caleb Plant in the undisputed super-middleweight fight. Putting on a striking masterclass, Canelo showed why he’s the true p4p great of boxing. On top of that, he also became the first man in history to claim all the 168-pound titles.

Canelo raised many eyebrows with his performance that night and countless boxing purists and stars applauded the Mexican star for his performance.

However, one of Alvarez’s old rivals, Floyd Mayweather, shared a different take on him altogether.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, he said, “We like Canelo Alvarez. He’s a hell of a fighter, but, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, Errol Spence, Terence Crawford, there’s so many other great fighters out there. And you know, just my honest opinion, I mean Benavidez, is a hell of a fighter also. So, you know that’s a good test for Canelo.”

Mayweather lauded Canelo for what he is, but he also had some other fighters in mind who he feels are true stalwarts of the game. While most of the names aren’t from middleweight or super-middleweight, ‘El Bandera Roja’ Benavidez is a prime 168 lbs puncher.

While Eddy Reynoso did reveal that Canelo Alvarez would move to cruiserweight, if Saul remains at 168-pounds, needless to say, David Benavidez will prove to be a rugged opponent for him.

Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez – Will it happen?

For a long time, ‘El Bandera Roja’ David Benavidez has asked for a fight against Canelo Alvarez. The lanky fighter and former two-time super-middleweight champ fairly believe he has the skill sets to beat the p4p king.

Also, he recently beat Kyrone Davis to make himself viable for a shot against Canelo.

Alvarez could come back down to 168 after he beats the cruiserweight champion, or return if that weight class proves to be too challenging. If the latter happens, Benavidez vs Alvarez is always a possibility.

It will be interesting to see if this fight materializes because hotshots like Mayweather, too, are excited about this contest. What do you make of Mayweather’s comments?
