James Blunt has promised he will never release any more music if he beats Adele to the number one spot on the album charts.

The pair have both released new music this week, James with his new album The Stars Beneath My Feet, while Adele released her long-awaited album 30.

James, 47, took to Twitter to issue a challenge to his followers, telling them: ‘I do solemnly swear that if my new album (out tomorrow) goes to Number 1, I will never write, record or sing another song for as long as I shall live.’

While that might be a pretty extreme length to go to, one person that would not be complaining about no more James Blunt music is the neighbour of a homeowner who was fined £1,400 for playing his songs all night.

James has sold over 20million records in his career and joked that Adele must be ‘bricking it’ going up against him in the chart battle.

He explained that Taylor Swift’s re-released Red album was also pulled to release a week earlier than planned ‘totally understandably’ so she would not have to compete with his own, joking that she and her label ‘had a panic’ about going against him.

The singer added that Adele and her team ‘must be nervous, certainly’ to go up against him – especially now his whole music career is at stake.

James joked to Metro.co.uk: ’I know it was a surprise for Taylor Swift, [she] did move her date when she saw mine was coming out on – I don’t even know the date mine’s coming out to be honest.

‘I know Taylor Swift obviously got nervous and changed her date when she realised mine was out, and I guess Adele just hasn’t noticed at this stage or her record label’s been a bit too busy.’

He then quipped: ‘I’m sure they’ll realise it now any minute now, maybe when they read this article and god knows how frightened they’ll feel as a result.’
