Matteo Berrettini Makes Unfortunate Announcement Following the End of Career-Best Season

Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini has had a painful week so far. After retiring from his opening group stage match at the ATP Finals 2021, the player has made another unfortunate announcement.

Berrettini revealed that he would not be a part of the Italian squad for the Davis Cup 2021. He suffered from an abdominal injury during his opening round match. The injury forced him to withdraw from the match and hasn’t yet shown signs of improvement.

He announced that he would not be part of the Davis Cup 2021 by releasing a statement on social media.

He stated, “What I’m about to write is the last thing I wanted to communicate to end the best season of my career. It has been a fantastic year, full of emotions, victories, painful defeats, and sadly injuries. The latter is the reason why I will not be able to participate in this year’s Davis Cup.”

Matteo Berrettini has reasons to smile about

Although this season has not ended on the best of notes for the Italian player, there are many positives for him to reflect back upon. He reached his first-ever Grand Slam final at the Wimbledon Championships this year. It was his second appearance at the ATP Finals. However, it ended for him in a sad manner.

The Italian star was massively disappointed at having to withdraw from the year-end Finals due to an injury in front of a hugely supportive home crowd.

The 25-year-old added, “My 2021 ends with many regrets but looking back I can only be proud of the journey I have made, so thanks to all of you, my team, and my family, for the support, the cheering, and for the countless words you have spent for complimenting me or as in the last few days, to cheer me up.”

Coming to tennis, Berrettini lost in the fourth round of the Australian Open this year. After that, he came to Paris and lost in the quarterfinal of the French Open. He then went on to become the finalist at the All England Club. At the US Open, he lost in the quarterfinal. In three Grand Slams, except for the Australian Open, Matteo was knocked out by World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

As a fan, one hopes for the Italian player to recover in time so that he can focus on training during the off-season. All eyes will be on him when he steps on the courts in the 2022 season.
