At a time where everybody needs a bit of cheering up, TV favourite Race Across The World could be returning to our screens.

It has been reported that after two years off our screen, the BBC competition is coming back for series three in 2022.

The show involved teams of two – made up of friends, family members and couples – racing across the world using any method of transport other than a plane to reach a set destination, and attempting to do it in the fastest time.

Race Across The World first premiered in 2019, but gained even more of a following last year when series two aired during the early days of lockdown, and the BBC is reportedly hoping to get the show back on track now that travelling is possible again.

A source told The Sun: ‘Everyone has been desperate for producers to do more, but because of the pandemic and all of the travel restrictions it’s just not been possible.

‘But now they’re starting to gear up to send another lucky set of contestants on their travels in 2022.’

Applications for the third series originally closed in May 2020, but the ongoing pandemic made shooting the show last year impossible.

It is expected that the 2022 series will be a civilian one, rather than the celebrity version announced in late 2019.

A line-up and start date were not confirmed, and it is unclear if the celebrity series is still being made.

Race Across The World has been praised for its wholesome and heartfelt energy, as teams attempt to travel the world with no electronic devices and a limited amount of money, although they can work along the way to earn more.

Series one saw husband and wife Elaine and Tony win £20,000 after racing from London to Singapore.

The second series, which began airing in March 2020, saw five teams racing from Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City to the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia in Argentina.

Uncle and nephew duo Emon and Jamiul claimed the £20,000 prize, beating rivals Jen and Rob by 20 seconds.

They chose to donate most of their prize money to charity.

Race Across The World is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
