There’s something strange in the neighbourhood – Ghostbusters: Afterlife has finally dropped in UK cinemas.

Fans of the paranormal have been excitedly awaiting the release of the new movie, which was due to be released in July 2020 but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Afterlife was written and directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman — the original Ghostbusters’ progenitor.

But is it a sequel to the classic 1984 movie, and who is in the cast?

Who is in the cast of Ghostbusters: Afterlife?

Who are you gonna call?

Well, Paul Rudd and crew.

The movie is chock full of famous faces (Picture: Ella Millward/Columbia Pictures)

Rudd, who was recently voted the Sexiest Man Alive, is joined by teenage heartthrob Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), and Mckenna Grace (The Haunting of Hill House).

Josh Gad and Olivia Wilde also make cameo appearances in the spooky flick.

Additionally, several of the original movie’s cast members reprised their iconic roles, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.

When asked about the pressure Rudd must be feeling to take on the iconic franchise, he said that it can be ‘overwhelming’, but he chooses to see his involvement as ‘more of an honour’ than something to be daunted by.

Rudd explained to Digital Spy: ‘I don’t really dwell on that kind of stuff because it can be overwhelming at times. It was good. I mean, we’re always aware of the love that a lot of people have for the original.

‘I thought, instead of the pressure it was more of an honour, I’d say.

‘And it was a very cool thing to look over to the side and see Jason Reitman sitting there conferring with his dad, Ivan, and knowing what this franchise means to them, and the love and care and passion that they put into it.’

The movie follows a single mother and her two children who’ve hit upon hard times and move to a small town in Oklahoma where they’ve inherited property.

The children eventually come to discover supernatural goings-on in their new town and secrets about their own family history.

Sigourney Weaver, who is reprising her role as Dana Barrett, said that fans should expect a ‘glorious’ film.

She told ET Canada: ‘It’s very funny. It’s very charming. And it will surprise everybody. It’s just a glorious film.’

Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife a sequel?

Yes, Afterlife is a direct sequel, set around 30 years after 1989’s Ghostbusters II.

Murray and the rest of the Ghostbusting gang reprise their original roles for the movie.

However, the latest installment in the franchise disregards the existence of the female-led reboot – which starred Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy.
