Louis Theroux and Joe Wicks have struck up a lovely little bromance after becoming friends during the pandemic… and it all started with a bad impression.

Theroux, 51, like most of the country, joined in with Wicks’ online workouts with his family during lockdown.

The documentary maker later did an off-the-cuff impression of Wicks, which he admits wasn’t his best and he wasn’t exactly thrilled when it went viral.

The journalist told Jonathan Ross: ‘I think he was possibly confused, maybe his feelings were even a little bit hurt.’

But things only got better from there, as the pair met in person.

‘I got invited onto his podcast and I said to him, “I really do apologise for doing an impression of you,” and we struck up a little bit of a bromance,’ Theroux said.

‘I heard him on Desert Island Discs talking about his upbringing, and I realised his story was amazing.’

Theroux then ‘dropped him a line’ to tell the fitness guru he’d be ‘honoured’ to do a documentary on it all.

Theroux shared that he isn’t in the documentary himself, but he will work as an executive producer.

After listening to Wicks talk about his family and parents, he was inspired to make ‘a profile of Joe Wicks.’

The BBC One project will focus on the fitness coach’s parents’ battles with OCD and heroin addiction.

Theroux has said it’s a ‘dream project’ and Wicks hopes the documentary will help show exercise was a ‘powerful tool in helping to boost our mental health’.

‘I’ve spent a lot of time helping people improve their physical health, but as a child that grew up in a home with parents that struggled with their mental health, I know that this is just as important, especially given what’s happened over the last year,’ The Body Coach said.

‘I’m passionate about exploring it.’

The documentary, titled Joe Wicks: Mental Health, My Family And Me, will be an ‘intimate and emotionally powerful film’ showing Wicks revisiting his childhood and sharing how his upbringing inspired him to stay healthy.

The documentary will air this month.
