I’m A Celebrity: Where is the series filmed and can you visit?

I’m A Celebrity is back on our screens – but not yet back in the Australian jungle.

Due to the pandemic, the show’s usual bush-based camp on the opposite side of the globe is a bit out of reach.

ITV upped sticks in 2020 to a UK filming location, shooting in not-so-sunny Wales instead.

And the same site is being used for the new series, which stars Frankie Bridge, Richard Madeley and TV’s Louise Minchin.

So, where is filming taking place, and where are the I’m A Celebrity campmates staying?

Here’s what you need to know.

This year’s I’m A Celebrity is being filmed in Gwrych Castle in Wales.

It’s located near the North Wales town of Abergele, in Conwy – and was built in the early 1800s.

It was previously owned by Winifred Bamford-Hesketh, Countess of Dundonald – but it began to change hands in the mid-1900s, before closing for good in 1985.

The castle is now essentially derelict – and belongs to the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust and its head, Mark Baker.

Many fans will recognise it 2020’s campsite – and where Queen of the Castle Giovanna Fletcher was crowned.

But local residents appear divided by the choice to film here again, as nearby roads and walking paths have been blocked off.

Last night, a sneak peek of one of the first trials at Gwrych was revealed (Picture: Kieron McCarron/ITV/REX/Shutterstock)

Prior to the 2021’s cast’s arrival, Gwrych was spotted surrounded by flames for what will surely be a dramatic start to the series.

We’ve even seen a sneak peek of the very first Bushtucker trial, which sees Gwrych dramatically-lit at night.

Can you visit I’m A Celebrity’s filming location?

Not right now, no – though one overzealous mum did manage to break in recently.

Unfortunately, Gwrych Castle is closed to the public for visits until March 21, 2022.

And any paid-for visits booked between now and then, which are now cancelled, will be refunded.

On their website, a statement said: ‘All tickets purchased after September 5 for 2021 will be refunded. All annual passes will be extended for the duration that we are closed.’

If you’re keen to see the I’m A Celebrity location for yourself (or you just love castles), you can book tickets in advance.

Generally, your ticket will allow you to see the castle’s gardens, the castle exterior and only a few interiors. As the main part of the castle is in ruin, it wouldn’t be safe for visitors to walk through.

However, Gwrych Castle’s website does suggest a future I’m A Celebrity-themed tour might be on the cards.

In the FAQs, they state: ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here set items and locations are throughout the castle & grounds.

‘We are working with ITV to develop an I’m A Celebrity Tour as well as opening more interior spaces.’

I’m A Celebrity starts on Sunday, November 21 at 9pm on ITV.
