Australian journalist ‘mortified’ after telling Adele he hadn’t listened to her album in an interview about her album

Australian journalist bungles Adele interview about new album by telling Adele he’s not listened to her new album

Australian journalist Matt Doran denied he’s been ‘formally suspended’ after admitting to Adele during an interview for her new album 30, that he had not, indeed, listened to her new album, 30.

Some may call that an almighty rookie error to phone it on for Adele.

The journalist had travelled from Australia to London for the interview, reported to be part of a $1million (£540k) deal between broadcaster Channel 7, Sony Pictures and CBS, and for anyone who’s done that flight, you want to make sure it’s worth it.

However, after admitting to the Easy On Me singer he’d not listened to the record he was flown around the world to interview her about, Rumour Has It Adele cut the interview short, Sony banned the broadcaster from airing what footage Channel 7 did have, and Doran was ‘suspended’ from air.

Speaking about the blunder, Doran told The Australian he was ‘mortified and unequivocally apologetic’, explaining an advance copy of 30 was emailed to him but he ‘somehow missed’ it, adding the message was ‘the most important email I have ever missed’.

The Weekend Sunrise host went on to clarify that contrary to reports, he wasn’t formally suspended from Sunrise, despite reports he was taken off air for two weeks. It’s been claimed he’s since returned to reporting duties.

Doran said of the missed album link sent to him before flying to London on November 3: ‘When I sat down to interview Adele, I was totally unaware that I’d been emailed a preview of her unreleased album.

‘I have since discovered it was sent to me as an ‘e card’ link, which I somehow missed upon landing in London. It was an oversight but NOT a deliberate snub. This is the most important email I have ever missed.’

Amid speculation the journalist – who had been granted the only Australian interview access to Adele, in a blow to every other outlet which would have scrambled to sit down with the star – said he’d not listened to the album, Doran explained when asked by the singer if he’d caught wind of what can only be described as the biggest release of the year (at least), he responded by saying that he had heard her single, Easy On Me, ‘but not the other tracks’.

While reports claimed the singer then ‘stormed out’ after finding Doran had snubbed the album, the journalist insisted it was the ‘polar opposite’.

He said: ‘Adele didn’t storm out. In fact, it was the polar opposite. What was meant to be 20 minutes was extended to 29 minutes.

‘The majority of the chat was about the album. I told her: “I’ve only had the privilege of hearing Easy on Me, but not the other tracks.”‘

According to more reports – this is trifle-level layered, we tell you – Adele’s label Sony barred Channel 7 from airing the footage, with veto rights on the content. Rival network Channel 10 went on to air clips from Oprah Winfrey’s One Night Only special with the singer.

Of course the entertainment journalism world has well and truly kicked off amid this news, with writer Tarla Lambert describing Doran’s snub as ‘privilege personified’.

She wrote in Women’s Agenda: ‘There are thousands upon thousands of highly qualified, talented reporters waiting in the wings who would kill for Matt Doran’s position.

‘The fact that he thought it was reasonable to rock up to an interview with one of the world’s most influential women, and fail to ask her about her work, is reason enough to give one of these other young hopefuls a chance.’

However, please spare a thought for an ABC political reporter Matt Doran, who has been lobbed with some almighty criticism online with many not realising there is more than one Aussie journo with the same name.

He tweeted amid the mayhem: ‘Go easy on me…’
