Sega & Microsoft super games won’t be Xbox exclusives

While Microsoft is assisting Sega with its super game initiative, that doesn’t mean Sega is planning any Xbox exclusives.

Earlier this month, Sega announced that it is teaming up with Microsoft for its big super game initiative. At the time, though, it was unclear if this partnership meant the games in question would be Xbox exclusives.

Considering Microsoft has been scooping up studios left and right to make more Xbox only games (there were rumours of it outright buying Sega back in January), it wouldn’t have been surprising if this was the case. But Sega appears to have shot down the possibility.

In Sega’s most recent fiscal meeting, the topic of the super game initiative and the partnership with Microsoft came up when discussing the company’s plans. Sega execs explained that the partnership doesn’t mean Sega will start releasing Xbox exclusives, explicitly adding that it wishes to deliver super games to everyone.

‘We are not talking about releasing games to Microsoft exclusively, but rather to develop super game[s] that will be delivered to the world together, with their technical support.’

As Sega says, it already had a close relationship with Microsoft thanks to releasing games for its platforms and assisting with the development of some first party games. No doubt Sega is referring to Halo Wars 2 and Age Of Empires 4, which were worked on by Sega owned studios Creative Assembly (the Total War developer) and Relic Entertainment (Company Of Heroes), respectively.

‘When we announced the concept of super game[s], Microsoft was sympathetic
to that vision and that leads to the announcement this time.’

It’s still not entirely clear exactly what a super game is. All Sega has said is that they will be ‘large scale, global games’ built using Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, with a key focus on online play and community.

The company has also been discussing potential revivals of some of its dormant franchises, such as Altered Beast, Jet Set Radio, and Crazy Taxi, whether in the form of remasters, remakes, or sequels.

Creative Assembly is working on a secret first person shooter game, but no new information has been shared since the teaser image in May, which was filled with Easter eggs referencing other Sega properties.

Still no clue what this is all about (pic: Creative Assembly)
