Tyson Fury Admits He’s Trying to Avoid Fighting a ‘Volunteer’

After a career-defining win over Wilder, Tyson Fury is now expected to go for blockbuster bouts only. While a potential unification clash can rightly allure him, the same shall not happen unless Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk squash their competition in a rematch. Thus, WBC champion Fury looks favorable to go against his mandatory Dillian Whyte.

Per recent WBC revelations, Whyte shall receive the first shot at the heavyweight belt since the Briton already has the Interim title. But certain factors can still prevent Fury vs Whyte from happening. The paper works and arbitration turmoils are massive features to complicate the scene and if that happens, Fury may have to go for some other opponent.

In a chat with IFL TV, ‘The Gypsy King’ said, “I thought I was gonna be fighting Dillian Whyte. I don’t know what he is doing in his own private life for the WBC, got a court case going on which is kind of sh** really because I know how long arbitration goes on for.”

“Because it took 18 months to get mine sorted with Deontay Wilder. So I hope he [Whyte] doesn’t get caught in the long grass. And I hope I don’t have to face somebody else like a volunteer.”

Before Fury vs Wilder 3, WBC had set forth a straightforward plan for their heavyweight title. Interim titlist Whyte was supposed to face Otto Wallin in October. But Whyte backed off after suffering a bicep injury. Although the governing body could have taken away the title shot from Dillian Whyte,the WBC Interim title still favors him to compete for the world championship.

Will we see Tyson Fury in action anytime soon?

‘The Gypsy King’ had claimed to relish a long layoff after beating Wider for the second time in October. Hence, we cannot expect him to return, at least till mid-2022. Tyson Fury came back to action in October after more than a year since his first win over Wilder. But the current heavyweight scene is in a complex form and we may see the world titles change shoulder pretty soon.

If Anthony Joshua regains his lost titles against Oleksandr Usyk, the fantasy- AJ vs Fury will come to life yet again. In that case, Whyte may take a back seat in earning his shot at the WBC world title. So, Fury can sit back and see how the division plays out and then craft his plans for a return accordingly.
