Great British Bake Off viewers were feeling all kinds of emotions as Giuseppe Dell’Anno received a heartfelt message from his elderly dad.

The Italian baker competed in this year’s finale alongside Chigs Parmar and Crystelle Pereira on Tuesday night.

Before they got in the kitchen, the trio were played emotional videos from their family and loved ones to give them a boost of motivation for the grand final.

Giuseppe received a video message from his elderly father in Italy and couldn’t help but break down in tears.

‘I wish you all the very best,’ his dad began while sat beside Giuseppe’s mother. ‘You have really surpassed me. A really really really big hug.’

‘He’s not very well, he’s getting towards his elderly stage,’ Giuseppe said to the camera. He then revealed that his dad used to be a keen baker himself back in the day and quipped: ‘They would make very good showstoppers for the bakers.’

As Chigs received a kiss through the screen from his adorable nephew, Crystelle’s sister told her: ‘Grandad would be looking down on you from above with the biggest smile on his face.’

Viewers struggled to fight back the tears, with one tweeting: ‘You just want to give Giuseppe a hug.’

Another emotional viewer said: ‘10 minutes in and we’re already in tears.’

‘No YOU are crying,’ another stated.

Once they’d gathered their composure, Giuseppe, Chigs and Crystelle were tasked with making a carrot cake for their first challenge – but of course it won’t be your bog standard carrot cake by any means.

Prue Leith asked for it to be something ‘really special and different’, while Paul Hollywood wanted the ‘carrot to be the hero’ but for the cake to have a ‘highly decorated’ element.

Giuseppe made one with fig and walnut jam inside, Crystelle opted for a four-layered masterpiece with cardamom, pistachio and orange, while Chigs’ carrot cake featured star anise infused pineapple jam.

However, Crystelle won the technical challenge – her first of the series – while Chigs came in second leaving poor Giuseppe to finish last in the bake off.

The Great British Bake Off continues tonight on Channel 4.
