Eddy Reynoso Explains Why Canelo Alvarez Is Avoiding David Benavidez

Former two-time world champion David Benavidez is looking to earn another title shot. For him, a match-up against Canelo would be the biggest fight of his career. Eddy Reynoso, who spoke to Canelo Alvarez about the David Benavidez fight, shared his opinions on ‘El Bandera Roja’ wanting to fight Canelo.

He said to Fox Deportes, “No way [does Canelo have to face Benavidez next]. Great boxers are the ones who beat champions. I think Benavidez is a good fighter, but up until this point, for me he has not achieved what people think.”

“My respects to him, but just take a look [and tell me] how many world champions has he beaten, how many defenses of his title has he made, how many unifications has he completed. We are going to look for the challenges, we are going to look for the champions and we are going to look for what’s best for the career of Saul, and if the fight with Benavidez comes around, then we welcome it… it’s boxing and it’s business.” (h/t BoxingScene)

Reynoso also revealed the possible location for his next fight, as Canelo looks to go back to Mexico. The last time Alvarez fought in Mexico was back in 2011.

He said, “We missed the December date, which is when we wanted to do a fight in Mexico City or Guadalajara… that’s what we want do next year. We want to fight on our land, where Saul made his pro debut.”

Canelo Alvarez moves up to Cruiserweight

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will look to emulate the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao as he moves up to Cruiserweight to challenge the champion Ilunga Makabu for his WBC Cruiserweight title.

As Canelo has not fought at Cruiserweight before, Eddy Reynoso petitioned the WBC to order the fight. During their convention, the WBC sanctioned the fight, thus allowing Canelo to move up to Cruiserweight and challenge the champion. With that action, it is only a matter of time until the two parties reach an agreement for the fight. If not, the WBC will announce a purse bid for the fight.
