Buying individual gift cards from retailers can bode badly for consumers as shops do not have to honour the voucher is they are struggling financially.
If a company falls into administration, the administrators will decide whether the retailer will accept gift cards or not.
This decision could change – gift cards could be allowed at the start of the process, but the administrators could stop them later on.
MoneySavingExpert’s Martin Lewis advised consumers against giving gift cards as presents last Christmas when Topshop and other retailers went into administration.
However, a gift voucher such as Love2Shop, which covers numerous retailers, might be a better option for Christmas gift-giving.
If you have a Love2Shop voucher or are planning on buying one, here is everything you need to know.

What is Love2shop?
Love2shop is a multi-retailer voucher that is accepted by hundreds of retailers across the UK.
This means that you’re not limited to spending it in one store.
Owned by the Appreciate Group Plc, there are four different types of vouchers available to buy: Love2Shop voucher, Love2Shop gift care, Love2Shop e-gift card and the Love2Shop contactless card.
Each product is accepted by different retailers so it’s essential to check which shops accept which voucher or gift card.
Where can I spend my Love2shop vouchers?
Love2shop vouchers are paper gift vouchers that you redeem for in-store purchases.

Gift cards – your rights explained
If you’re worried about purchasing a gift card, then have no fear – we can explain where your stand.
Between January and August 2021, 13 companies went into administration says the Centre for Retail Research – this affected 1,687 stores.
Consumer champion Which?’ research shows that two in five people were not able to spend the full balance on gift cards for retailers that went bust in the past year.
They lost an average of £25 per voucher.
This is because it is ultimately up to the administrators to manage the process to decide whether gift cards should be accepted or not.
It means you’ll need to keep an eye on the administration process to see what your rights are.
The administrators are allowed to stop accepting gift cards at any point.
If the administrators later decide that you can’t use your vouchers, you should register a claim with the administrations for the value of the vouchers.
This also applies if the company can’t be saved through administration and is later liquidated.
However, you still might not get your money back if other creditors are owed money too. You might get a portion of the money back.
If the voucher or amount put on a gift card was over £100, then it could be possible to claim the money back if it was purchased with a credit card.
Credit card companies are jointly liable under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
If the voucher was a gift, then you’d need to ask the person who bought it for you to claim the money back.
