Floyd Mayweather’s Protégé Gervonta Davis Explains Why He Compared Himself With Canelo Alvarez

Gervonta Davis had claimed to be in a similar position with Canelo Alvarez after the Mexican boxer stopped Caleb Plant on November 6 to become the maiden undisputed super middleweight champion. Although Davis is still to achieve half of what Alvarez has accomplished, the Baltimore native had still put himself in a similar bracket to the P4P king.

It didn’t sit well with several people who hit out at ‘Tank’. However, Davis has explained his statement and has detailed why he compared himself with Canelo Alvarez.

Gervonta Davis said, “Everybody took it in a wrong way, saying that you know talk about his accomplishments. I was just saying that you know I have the same skill set as Canelo. You know at 135, 130, 140.”

Well, Gervonta Davis may have a point in reality. The 27-year-old is already a three-division world champion and currently holds an exceptional record of 25-0 with 24 KOs included. He still has several more years to see as a pro boxer and can rightly land up in more divisions and claim titles in all of them. As smooth as it sounds, the reality will demand a lot from ‘Tank’ Davis.

Is it too early to compare Gervonta Davis with Canelo Alvarez?

Undoubtedly, Davis and Alvarez are way too far to be compared with each other. Canelo Alvarez has fought some of the best fighters of all time and has managed to become one of them. He is a four-division world champion, who is still extremely active in the sport. That said, the P4P king now wants to taste the cruiserweight gold and can soon aim towards becoming a five-division titlist.

As for Davis, he has to clean sweep the 135 lbs division. For that, he will have to take on the best fighters. ‘Tank’ hasn’t unified his belts yet and unless he does that, he will always face criticism if he compares himself to Alvarez.

However, he has whatever it takes to box his way into history and earn comparisons with Canelo. That being said, right now, it is too early.
