Here’s How Microsoft Made Nintendo “Laugh Their A** Off” in 1999

Nintendo and Xbox are in talks right now after featuring Reggie Fils-Aimé at an Xbox event. So, here we are again with another Nintendo and Microsoft memory from the year 1999. And it’s so hilarious that it ended up with Nintendo employees laughing hard at Microsoft employees. So on 23rd Nov 2021, Microsoft shared the image of a letter that they sent to Nintendo on 20th Oct 1999. And the motive behind this letter was to purchase Nintendo to improve the Xbox’s video games division.

During that time, Xbox was preparing to launch the first-ever Xbox console. But the devs feared what if there weren’t enough games for the console? Actually, this concern gave birth to the wonderful idea of purchasing the entire Nintendo company. So, the Xbox could feature some good games in its library at the time of its release. But it turned out to be a disaster for Microsoft and the rest is history. In fact, Nintendo not only declined the offer but also laughed their a** off in front of Microsoft employees.

Nintendo & Microsoft more details

It looks like it must be a very embarrassing moment for the Microsoft employees. Actually, Microsoft’s former director of third-party relations for Xbox, who goes by the name of Kevin Bachus, shared this entire story. According to Kotaku, here’s what he said about the whole incident:

“Steve [Ballmer, Microsoft’s former CEO] made us go meet with Nintendo to see if they would consider being acquired. “They just laughed their asses off. Like, imagine an hour of somebody just laughing at you. That was kind of how that meeting went.”

The most interesting part is this whole thing happened right in front of Steve Ballmer, who was the CEO of Microsoft in 1999. In fact, it’s not just Nintendo that Microsoft offered to buy out during the 19s. There were some other companies too that received acquisition offers from the tech giants. And these companies are Square, Electronic Arts, and Midway Games and obviously, all these companies declined.
