The Weeknd has been nominated for no less than three Grammys – despite boycotting the awards.
Kanye West’s track Hurricane has earned The Weeknd a nomination for best melodic rap performance, while Ye’s album Donda, and Doja Cat’s Planet Her (Deluxe), have The Weeknd as a featured artist.
Both albums have been nominated for album of the year, however, it’s unclear how The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, feels about this.
Last year, the music world was shocked when the musician didn’t pick up a single Grammy nomination.
This was despite having multiple hits in 2020, in particular, the phenomenally popular Blinding Lights, which reached number one in several countries, inspired a TikTok dance trend and was named record of the year by Variety.
Furious at the snub, he took to Instagram where he called the awards ‘corrupt’ and called for ‘transparency’, and later in the year promised to boycott the ceremony.
He also banned his record label from submitting any of his songs to the committee to be considered for a nomination.

Despite all this, on Tuesday, The Weeknd was nominated for a total of three awards, leading to some confusion from fans.
However, all three of The Weeknd’s nominated tracks are from record labels different from his own.
Each year, record labels submit what they believe to be the most popular songs from their portfolio of artists, and a committee then decides whether to nominate them for a Grammy before one is eventually chosen as the winner.
The Weeknd’s label, Republic, agreed to his wishes not to have his music submitted to the awards, but he’s been nominated through Kanye and Doja’s individual labels.

The Weeknd previously won three Grammys: R&B Performance and Urban Contemporary Album in 2016, and the latter award again in 2018.
However he has since said the gongs now ‘mean nothing’ to him.
The Blinding Lights singer is now branching out from music, and is co-directing a brand new drama from HBO.
Titled The Idol, the six-part series is collecting a star-studded cast, including The Weeknd himself, as well as Lily-Rose Depp and even Britney Spears.

The show will follow a young pop singer who becomes romantically involved with a club owner in LA, who turns out to be the leader of a secret cult.
While HBO has not specified the roles Lily-Rose and The Weeknd will be taking on, it’s believed they will portray the pop singer and the club owner respectively.
