Gennady Golovkin Explains Why He’s Not Willing to Chase Canelo Alvarez to 175 LBS

For a long time now, fans have desperately waited for a trilogy between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. The duo entered their last bout in 2018 and post that, the p4p king moved up to bag championship belts in the super-middleweight and light-heavyweight category.

Also, Canelo recently became the undisputed super middleweight champion, and he also announced his move up to the cruiserweight roster. With this, the probability of him facing ‘GGG’ in a trilogy seems less. However, it can still happen if Golovkin moves up in weight.

But, for some reason, ‘GGG’ is not willing to do so. Recently, the IBF middleweight champion spoke to Sky Sports about the same.

He said, “I don’t want to entertain moving to a different division unless there is an offer on the table,” he said.

“Imagine if I moved to 175lbs [light-heavyweight], the number of people calling me out will increase by 30 percent!”

“The army of fighters who self-promote themselves by using my name would only increase in number.”

Golovkin and Canelo locked horns for the first time in 2017. Both the men waged a war against each other but their fight ended with a tragic draw, resulting in a rematch in 2018. In this second meet, Canelo had an edge, and he fairly kept up with his punching pace.

That said, after relentlessly pressuring ‘GGG’ for 12-rounds, Alvarez claimed a win and settled his feud. But, even after two bouts, fans remained assertive about seeing a third war between the two. However, Canelo has some different plans in his mind and he’s keen on tracing the same.

Has Canelo Alvarez moved on from the Gennady Golovkin trilogy?

Canelo will challenge the WBC cruiserweight champ, Ilunga Makabu in his next boxing outing.

With this, Alvarez will look to establish his supremacy in another weight class. But simultaneously, it looks like the p4p bigwig has moved on from a trilogy with ‘GGG’.

For now, fans can only keep their fingers crossed to see Canelo vs Golovkin happening in the near future. But as of now, it doesn’t look like this fight will materialize.
