Shane Ritchie invented genius hack that allows I’m A Celebrity campmates to have secret conversations that won’t be shown on TV

There is little room for privacy in the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! camp, as everything from showers to snoring, blazing rows and emotional breakdowns are captured on camera.

However, the campmates have found a secret way to have personal conversations they know won’t be aired to the nation.

The genius hack was originally invented by EastEnders star Shane Ritchie in the 2020 series.

He shared the hack with fellow campmate Victoria Derbyshire, and she revealed in The Mirror exactly how it works.

She wrote: ‘If we ever wanted to talk about something privately that we didn’t want to appear on television, Shane told us to sing a famous song in the middle of it because ITV wouldn’t want to pay for the rights to the track, so wouldn’t include it on the show.’

Fellow campmate and 2020 runner-up Jordan North also previously explained the tactic on Radio 1’s Breakfast Show.

‘So, if we were having a conversation that we didn’t want to go on air, we’d have a conversation and we’d get someone in the background to sing I Want To Break Free,’ he shared.

‘So I’d be there with Shane Richie going, “Is he really like that? I’ve always loved him on the telly”.

‘Shane’s saying, “Can’t stand him mate, he is nothing like you see”.’

He added: ‘Then you’ve got Vernon in the background going, “Hey Jude, don’t let me down”.’

He said campmates ‘knew’ their conversations wouldn’t get aired, which is super sneaky if you ask us… although not so much anymore now the whole world knows about it.

This isn’t campmates’ only way of sending secret signals, as 2021 star Frankie Bridge has already been using signals to send a message to her Loose Women co stars back home.

The Saturdays singer – who has fast become a fan favourite – told her friends and colleagues before entering Gwrych Castle that she’d do a little jiggle to let them know she was thinking of them.

Frankie is not the first one thought to be sending signals to the outside world, with Vernon Kay and Giovanna Fletcher last year both flashing signs to let loved ones at home know they’re thinking of them.

I’m A Celebrity airs 9pm tonight on ITV.
