22 Players Pull Out of Ongoing DP World Tour Season Opener Due to a Massive Scare

The European Tour, which is now a DP World Tour, is currently underway in South Africa with Joburg Open. However, an unfortunate situation has hit this event because of which around 22 players have withdrawn from the event. Most of these golfers are from the UK and Ireland, who have dropped out or retired. 

Meanwhile, Joburg Open is the first event of the DP World Tour. However, with players withdrawing their names from the event, it is tough for them to manage this situation. But why are players withdrawing from this event all of a sudden? Let’s find out. 

Why are players withdrawing from the DP World Tour season opener? 

Ahead of the second round of the 2021 Joburg Open, South Africa was added to the UK government’s travel red list. Hence, they have suspended flights to England from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe from midday Friday. So anyone arriving after 4 a.m. on Saturday will need to undergo a hard quarantine in the hotel.

Meanwhile, as of now, there are around 22 players who have withdrawn from this event. Most of them are from the UK, and they want to enter the country as soon as possible. Furthermore, DP World Tour has said players can withdraw from the event without any penalty because of the circumstances. 

Moreover, Joburg Open was the start of the Open qualifying series as the three players from the top-10 who aren’t qualified yet will have a chance of playing the Open Championship next year at St. Andrews. But with an increase in the withdrawals, it will be a challenging situation for the authorities to complete the event. 

However, the authorities haven’t canceled or postponed the event. They are going ahead with the Joburg Open as scheduled as of now. Moreover, even though most of the players from the UK have withdrawn, there are still quite a few local players competing. Hence, they have decided to go ahead with the event.
