Alison Hammond was left in stitches on This Morning as comedy icon Barry Humphries made a cheeky joke about Phillip Schofield coming out as gay.

Sitting down for a very chaotic chat with the pair, the Dame Edna Everage creator turned his attentions to Dermot O’Leary, insisting he had a very good memory and praising him for his ‘courage’.

With Dermot left a little baffled, Barry went on: ‘Last year, when he came out and told us about his sexuality.’

Alison was left in pieces, with Barry continuing: ‘No, no. I think a lot of people respected you for that.’

Laughing, Dermot responded: ‘Thank you. I’ll pass that onto the gentleman who’s here from Monday to Thursday.’

‘Sorry, have I-‘ Barry asked, going on: ‘Your bravery was amazing. And by the way, we’re all in show business.’

Phillip came out as gay last year, making a statement on the show alongside his co-host Holly Willoughby and thanking his wife Stephanie and their two daughters for their support.

He said at the time: ‘My family have held me so close: they have tried to cheer me up, to smother me with kindness and love, despite their own confusion. Yet I still can’t sleep and there have been some very dark moments.’

He continued: ‘My inner conflict contrasts with an outside world that has changed so very much for the better. Today, quite rightly, being gay is a reason to celebrate and be proud. Yes, I am feeling pain and confusion, but that only comes from the hurt I am causing for my family.

‘Steph has been incredible – I love her so very much. She is the kindest soul that I have ever met. My girls have been astonishing in their love, hugs and encouraging and words of comfort. Both mine and Steph’s entire families have stunned me with their love, instant acceptance and support.

‘Of course they are worried about Steph, but I know they will scoop us both up.’

Since, the star has been widely praised and, this year, was left visibly emotional after winning a British LGBT Award.
