I was fired for turning up to work on time and leaving when my shift ended – my boss said I was doing the ‘bare minimum’

A BOSS has been labelled as a con artist after one woman claiming she was sacked for turning up on time and leaving when her shift finished.

In a Reddit post, the woman asks “am I the a**hole for not shutting up and working for free?” after her boss tried to make her work a 16 hour shift.

Sharing her story anonymously, the woman said that her boss expected her to work up to eight hours of overtime on certain shifts.

She also claimed she was fired from her job after receiving a warning from her boss for doing the ‘bare-minimum’ and not working longer, unpaid shifts.

She was hired by an unknown company in Australia and said that she asked to invoice the company for her overtime, but the boss refused, saying she’s not a ‘team player’.

Taking to Reddit, she said: “A couple of weeks ago my boss starts saying that she’s noticed I do the bare minimum…

“When asked to explain she said that clocking in on time and leaving on time is simply not enough.

“I am confused as I would understand if I was an employee of this company but I am kept on board as an hourly hired contractor by her choice.”

Some Reddit users were quick to call out the former boss, saying: “And now you know her secret- how SHE works less but earns more money- by cheating and stealing from employees like you.”

Another added: “Absolutely not. Work is a simple transaction: you offer your time, they pay for it. Any time you don’t get paid, you don’t work. Period.”

The woman continued in her post explaining how the company were throwing a 3 day event and a gala that she was expected to work longer, unpaid hours for.

She said: “I did it because I want to show my commitment and that I do ‘work hard’ but then I realised she wanted me to stay for the gala that would happen after the three-day event…

“I took it upon myself to ask her if it’s okay for me to bill her for the extra hours I would be working at the gala or if I can take those hours off the next week to balance it out.

“She got extremely upset saying that she’s not in a good place financially and that I am not being a team player.

“Anyways she told me she won’t be needing my services any longer and that I will not be getting paid for the four hours of extra work I did before either.”

‘ABSOLUTELY NOT’

Users rose to the defence of the original poster, saying: “You are not there to do her a favor. You are there to be an employee.

“Even if she was paying you for the entire time, 8am to midnight is completely unreasonable. The fact she isn’t even paying for it? Hahaha”

A second user commented: “Her finances are not your problem. Expecting someone to work for free isn’t being a team player.”

A third said: “Your former boss sounds like a con artist.”

One commenter went on to detail how the ‘wage theft’ is a right in Australia: “OP this is serious and you should definitely contact the federal fair work ombudsman about wage theft and super theft.”
