Strictly 2021: Mary Berry shares sweetest message for John Whaite and fans can’t handle it

Strictly Come Dancing 2021 has had some pretty great guest appearances so far from Sean Paul to Dame Emma Thompson, but Dame Mary Berry might have topped them all.

The baking legend shared a sweet message for Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite and his partner Johannes Radebe after their Argentine Tango to The 5th by David Garrett.

‘Now John, I knew that you were a star baker but gosh you’ve done brilliantly on Strictly!’ the 86-year-old said. ‘I’m very, very proud of you and good luck in the rest of the competition’.

‘Oh Mary, love you!’ John, 32, said, as Johannes, 34, couldn’t stop smiling.

Fans were obsessed with Dame Mary’s appearance, with one writing: ‘Dame Mary approves. Do not oppose her.’

‘MARY BERRY ?!?! I Would cry die and claim myself a winner right there and then,’ another said, while one more added: ‘It’s only Mary bloody Berry.’

Presenter Jack Murley added: ‘Crikey. When I was a kid, the closest we got to gay representation on TV was Todd Grimshaw giving Nick a peck on the lips in Corrie. Now, we’ve got Mary Berry congratulating John and Johannes on a tango so raunchy it blew the back off my telly. Progress, folks.’

Crikey.

When I was a kid, the closest we got to gay representation on TV was Todd Grimshaw giving Nick a peck on the lips in Corrie.

Now, we’ve got Mary Berry congratulating John and Johannes on a tango so raunchy it blew the back off my telly.

Progress, folks.#Strictly

John won the third series of Bake Off in 2012, when Dame Mary was a judge alongside Paul Hollywood.

Since, he’s been starring as a TV chef on shows like Steph’s Packed Lunch, and has taken Strictly by storm as part of the first all-male partnership.

Despite so many supporting the pair during their journey, Johannes previously opened up about his fears surrounding the abuse he might receive as part of a same-sex couple.

He told Hello! magazine: ‘There was no doubt in my mind that the dance side of it would work, but I was scared of the reaction it could bring.

‘I thought criticism would come from all sides. After speaking to my therapist I realised what was holding me back was still feeling ashamed.’

Despite his fear, Johannes said he ‘couldn’t let this opportunity go to anyone else.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns Sunday at 7:20pm on BBC One.
