Strictly 2021: Rhys Stephenson can’t stop crying at emotional dance and message from grandparents

Rhys Stephenson was left in floods of tears after Saturday’s performance on Strictly Come Dancing – and the crying just wouldn’t stop.

The presenter, 28, had danced a beautiful Waltz to You Light Up My Life by Debby Boone with his professional partner Nancy Xu, 30, and broke down after the pair finished their performance.

The couple have alternated between getting high scores and being in the dance off, and Rhys was more than determined not to end up in the bottom two another time.

Just as he’d collected his emotions, Rhys was treated to a video message from his grandma and grandpa from the Cayman Islands, who told him how proud they were of his time on the show.

As soon as the footage began, Rhys began sobbing with emotion at the sweet moment, and after a brief interlude was once again in tears after receiving his scores from the judges.

Rhys and Nancy were awarded a seven from Craig Revel-Horwood, nine from Cynthia Erivo who was standing in for Motsi Mabuse while she self-isolates, 10 from head judge Shirley Ballas and nine from Anton Du Beke, giving them a total of 35.

Cynthia told him: ‘I love the connection the two of you have on that dancefloor, you move with such grace, I just want you to breathe more.’

Shirley Ballas added: ‘You have astounded me from the top to the bottom, it was beautiful.

‘It had grace, it had charm, I felt your emotion. I just want to give you a hug and say well done.’

Craig Revel-Horwood’s feedback was more of a mixed bag as he told Rhys: ‘I felt you were following and not leading this dance.

‘For me it lacked drive completely, there was no swing, there was no sway, that is what made it look square and blocky.’
