The Grand Tour planning Arctic Circle expedition in Scandinavia as Russian special axed

The Grand Tour is planning for a Scandinavian expedition to the Arctic circle, after plans for a Russian special were scrapped due to the pandemic.

Stars of the show previously claimed they had a ‘big plan for a Russian special on hold’, but show boss Andy Wilman has now confirmed the show programme has ditched the idea.

Instead, a road trip to far flung corners of Scandinavia is now being organised.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk ahead of the release of upcoming Grand Tour special Carnage A Trois, filmed during lockdown, Andy gave a taste of what to expect.

‘We’ve got an arctic circle thing worked out,’ he said. ‘I can’t really say any more than that at the minute because we’re bolting all the bits together.

‘But it would be back to being a proper road trip, but it will be across the Arctic Circle and it will be tough – at least I hope we will be tough because we’ll be going in the depths of winter.’

Discussing the previous plans for a Russian special, Andy said: ‘We’re not going to try that one again. Because for the next foreign special we want to go into the snow. So we want to go up into Scandinavia to do that.

‘There’d be no room for the Russian one as well, because that was all about snow and being in that environment.’

The decision was also, in part, made due to travel conditions during the pandemic.

‘We have to plan five or six months ahead. And right now with Norway, Sweden and Finland, we can plan what the entry requirements are. We know what they want Covid wise. So if we do Scandinavia, I don’t see us going back to Russia for what we planned,’ he added.

It comes after stars of the show previously spoke about plans for a Russian trip – with James May even revealing they bought cars for the special before plans were parked.

‘We’ve got a big plan for Russia on hold,’ he said back in the summer. ‘It’s one that we couldn’t do when Covid kicked off. So I mean, it’d be nice to finish that off since we set it all up. We’ve even bought the cars. I’m not sure where they are, but they’re in storage somewhere.’

In the meantime, the presenting trio are setting off across the UK in French cars for new special Carnage A Trois – the second lockdown special to be released since the pandemic hit.

The Grand Tour Carnage A Trois is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video from December 17.
