Leigh-Anne Pinnock found it daunting to perform on her own for the first time without Little Mix in new rom-com Boxing Day

The Little Mix singer makes her acting debut in the Aml Ameen-directed film, which is the first Black British Christmas movie

She plays Georgia, a singer who is reacquainted with her ex-boyfriend, Melvin (Ameen), when he flies back home to the UK from Los Angeles for the festive period. He’s accompanied by his new fiance Lisa (Aja Naomi King) but it’s clear there is still some unfinished business between him and Georgia.

The trailer features a snippet of the show-stopping moment Georgia belts out Aretha Franklin classic, Say A Little Prayer, and well Leigh-Anne executes it beautifully, the singer found it to be new territory given she was without her Little Mix bandmates Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, the Sweet Melody hitmaker revealed: ‘I recorded that in my bathroom, just saying. I feel like when you’re in your own space, when you’re sitting on the toilet and you sing, you might hear the best you’ve done.

‘You’re in the comfort of your own space and I just put my soul into it. I just remember stepping onto the stage on set and I was so scared.’

She added: ‘I haven’t stood on my own and sang in 10 years so it was such a scary moment. It was wild.’

Kidulthood actor Aml enjoyed directing Leigh-Anne in the scene, which he also starred in with him taking on the roles of both actor and director.

He explained: ‘What I love about that scene particularly is the storytelling, what she did incredibly well is she didn’t just sing a song.

‘I don’t think it was just about the vocals, you told a story beat by beat and when we push in on you, you capture it so powerfully what you’re going through and the words of it. I feel like the greatest performances are when you interpret things really personally, and when I watch it it’s one of my favourite scenes in the movie.

‘Definitely props but it is that mindset that I felt you had that day.’

Leigh-Anne recalled fondly: ‘It was such a lovely moment.’
