San Francisco 49ers Lose Special Member of Coaching Staff

Recently San Francisco 49ers took to Twitter to announce the tragic demise of their former Special Team assistant coach Stan Kwan. The Niners sent condolences to the Kwan family and everyone close to him. Kwan has been a member of the NFL community since the early 90s.

“The 49ers mourn the passing of former assistant special teams coach Stan Kwan,” the Niners tweeted. “Our organization sends its condolences to the entire Kwan family.”

Stan Kwan’s 19 year NFL career ended with the San Francisco 49ers

Stan Kwan started his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers as the assistant special teams coach in 1991. He spent six years with the Chargers (1991-1996) before moving on to the Detroit Lions (1997-2000) for three years. Following which he moved on to spend two years with the Arizona Cardinals (2001-2003) before returning to the Lions (2004-2009) for another five years, but this time as the Special Teams coach.

After leaving the Lions in 2009, he coached the Bills (2010-2012) and the Saints (2013-2016) before hoping on board with the San Francisco 49ers for two (2018-2020) before retiring. And with that his 29 year coaching career in the NFL ended after reportedly coaching six teams.

Detroit Lions pay final respects to him

The death of Kwan came as a surprise to many since it was not known the cause of his death. However, later on it was reported that Kwan had passed away because of a sudden Heart Attack while he was sleeping. As his friend and former coworker, Nick Ferguson tweeted that Kwan ‘passed in his sleep due to a heart attack at age 54′.

Following the tweet shared by the 49ers, Detroit Lions too took the moment to pay respects to their former Special Teams coach reflecting upon his 10 years with the franchise. “We as an organization honor the life of Coach Stan Kwan, who spent 10 seasons (1997-2000, 2004-09) with the Detroit Lions as a respected special teams coach and was a friend to many across the NFL. We extend our condolences to the entire Kwan family,” the Lions tweeted.
