Strictly Come Dancing’s Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice have revealed they both had ‘genuine’ expectations that they would end up in the bottom two during last Sunday’s results show.
The popular pair, who scored 33 for their dramatic Paso Doble on Saturday, chatted with Jeanette on It Takes Two about their nerves while they waited for the results to come through.
With EastEnders star Rose admitting she was ‘definitely’ nervous, she went on to add: ‘I think anything could happen, and I genuinely thought everyone else did such an amazing dance – and we were in the middle [of the leader board].’
Giovanni agreed and said: ‘Just because now the competition is very hard and everyone is amazing, so you really never know. We just have to go there on Saturday and do our best.’
As they contemplated their position in the middle of the table – which is traditionally considered dangerous as the public may assume those dancers are safe – Rose shared what was going through her mind as they ended up a the last couple saved.
‘It was terrifying because I genuinely thought I could be in the bottom two and I thought, “Right. Be ready, be ready, be ready for it.”’

Giovanni added: ‘Genuinely, genuinely, we both thought it.’
Luckily the couple made it through and it was Tilly Ramsay and Nikita Kuzmin who saw their time called on the show.
Giovanni, 31, also told viewers how he had helped Rose with her impressive solo section at the top of their Paso on Saturday, explaining judge Craig Revel Horwood’s ‘master puppeteer’ remark.
‘I love [it] when my partner starts on their own, especially with this kind of dance, and usually we lip read. But because this one I really wanted Rose on her own, [so]I was behind the camera doing exactly the same movement that she was supposed to do, and obviously, I have to be a half beat forward [sic] from her so she can just go with me on the same time.

‘So I’m doing the movement before her so she can copy the right time – it’s basically telling the music through my movements.’
On Saturday the couple will dance an American Smooth to This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole, with Giovanni branding it ‘a good dance for us’.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
