BBC Breakfast: Where is Charlie Stayt today?

People who tune in to watch BBC Breakfast on a daily basis are often used to seeing Charlie Stayt on the red sofa alongside Naga Munchetty.

So on Thursday morning’s show, some may have been questioning where Charlie is, with Naga presenting the programme with BBC News correspondent Jon Kay instead.

Since 2006, Charlie has helmed the show from Thursday to Saturday, with Naga also taking up the post in 2010.

From Monday to Wednesday, BBC Breakfast is hosted by Dan Walker and Sally Nugent, who recently replaced I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star Louise Minchin.

So why is Charlie missing from his usual post?

There’s currently no official word on why Charlie has been replaced by Jon on today’s show.

Charlie doesn’t appear to have verified accounts on Twitter or Instagram, so a comment can’t be seen from him on social media, while Jon hasn’t tweeted about why he is on the programme.

Naga also hasn’t mentioned on Twitter where her usual sofa neighbour is.

Earlier this month, Jon stood in for Charlie on another occasion, with no reason being given for the shake-up.

Things appeared to become awkward between Jon and Naga on Thursday’s show when the subject of a ‘snog count’ was discussed.

While speaking to a GP Dr Rosemary Leonard about whether people should avoid kissing each other at Christmas parties, Jon remarked that they’d mentioned the word ‘snog’ on multiple occasions.

‘I don’t think we’ve ever had the word snog on Breakfast quite as much as we’ve had it this morning. Thank you for upping our snog count!’ he quipped.

‘I’m talking about the use of the word, not the action,’ Jon added, as Naga, clearly cringing over the topic of conversation, replied: ‘Don’t look at me when you say that word.’

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am.
