Craig Revel Horwood has revealed he would like to see transgender contestants taking part on Strictly Come Dancing in the future.

Boxer Nicola Adams made history as the first same-sex pairing in 2020 with professional dancer Katya Jones. Great British Bake Off winner John Whaite and Johannes Radebe are the first-all male partnership, however, Craig, 56, believes the hit BBC show can do more.

He told Fubar Radio’s Bobby Norris on Access All Areas: ‘We could go down the transgender route.

‘I think dance is a platform for anybody no matter who you are or where you’re from.’

The programme has also welcomed its first-ever deaf contestant, actress Rose Ayling- Ellis, who is partnered with Giovanni Pernice.

‘Humans have been dancing since the cavemen were dancing around fires for fertility and rain.

‘We’re social, we like dancing, we like celebrating and I think it’s time to do that,’ Craig added.

Although the performer is in the middle of this year’s series, it hasn’t stopped him from planning ahead, as he recently revealed he would love to see five judges in the upcoming series, with Italian choreographer Bruno Tonioli taking his rightful seat.

Speaking to MailOnline, he said: ‘We could easily have five people on that panel. I think our time would be limited because there are only two minutes for the judges to talk but we would make it count.’

Craig has described the show’s current celebrities as ‘extraordinary’ and struggled to predict who will be lifting the Glitterball in two weeks time.

‘I just don’t know what the outcome’s going to be, he mused.

‘I love Rose, I love AJ, I love John and Johannes. I even love Dan.’

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
