Hugh Grant will feature in Netflix’s upcoming mockumentary, which will use archived footage to mark an unprecedented year.

The special is a sequel to Death to 2020, which featured Hugh as British historian Tennyson Foss alongside Samuel L Jackson, and Lisa Kudrow, and tells the story of ‘another dreadful year.’

The light entertainment mixes ‘archival footage harvested from across the year with commentary from fictitious characters played by some of the world’s most beloved actors,’ an official description reads.

The Notting Hill actor, 61, will be also be joined by Joe Keery, William Jackson Harper, Stockard Channing, Cristin Milioti, and Nick Mohammed.

The 40-second trailer show Gemma Nerrick, played by Diane Morgan, talks about online dating during lockdown.

She says: ‘I was pretty lonely in lockdown, so instead of just crying on my own all night and all day and at weekends, I thought I’d try a dating app, only swiping men in masks to be on the safe side.’

The coronavirus pandemic, the George Floyd protests, and the US presidential election were covered in last year’s 70-minute mockumentary.

Metro.co.uk’s verdict was it ‘ultimately feels like an overly extended SNL sketch’ which should have stuck to one topic ‘as it would have anchored the runtime a bit more’.

The Evening Standard said it ‘outstayed its welcome’ like ‘the year it reflected on’. However, critic Nancy Durrant praised the female stars as ‘brilliantly chilling’ with Kudrow standing out as White House spokeswoman Jeanetta Grace Susan.

Let’s hope this year’s show brings in the laughs.

Death To 2021 is executive produced by Annabel Jones and Ben Caudell and produced by Nick Vaughan-Smith.

The Broke and Bones production is directed by Josh Ruben.
