Joanna Lumley has branded The Crown ‘laughable’ over the ‘made-up conversations’ in the dialogue, hitting out at the Netflix series yet again in defence of the royal family.
Ever since the drama premiered in 2016, while it has gripped audiences across the world, it has also sparked discussion over the historical accuracy of the tale being told.
In 2018, the creator of the show, Peter Morgan, said that while he conducts extensive research for his writing, they have ‘to make some sort of leaps of the imagination about how people were feeling’, adding: ‘Maybe sometimes I get it wrong, because they aren’t friends of mine. So it’s a tricky one.’
Joanna, who is a friend of Prince Charles, has lashed out at the programme in a new interview – not the first time that she has done so.
The Absolutely Fabulous star said that she doesn’t think Charles or Camilla watch it, nor does she.
‘I know them, so I know it’s all made up and it’s rubbish. All the poor actors who are doing their best to copy them, it’s awful,’ she told Australian Women’s Weekly magazine, according to The Mirror.

‘Imagine somebody making up conversations they think you’ve had,’ the 75-year-old said.
‘It’s so laughable. They’ve used real people, whom they’ve copied, and then made up all the conversations. It’s insane.’
Earlier this year, Joanna said that she found The Crown ‘ghastly’, adding that she wouldn’t ever want to be cast in the series.

She stated that she found it ‘awful’ that some people who watch it may not be aware that it’s ‘made up’.
While Joanna isn’t going to be watching The Crown any time soon, in February, Prince Harry admitted that he felt ‘way more comfortable’ with the show than he does ‘seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself’.
Speaking to James Corden, he said: ‘They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fictional. But it’s loosely based on the truth.
‘Of course, it’s not strictly accurate, of course not but loosely it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that.’

The upcoming fifth season will see Imelda Staunton step into the shoes of Queen Elizabeth II, succeeding Olivia Colman in the role, who took over from Claire Foy.
Elizabeth Debicki is set to portray Princess Diana, following Emma Corrin’s performance, with Dominic West depicting Prince Charles, after Josh O’Connor.
The Crown is available to watch on Netflix.
