Mariah Carey has revealed her extravagant dress for her upcoming Christmas special, The Magic Continues, was so heavy she needed an army of assistants to help her move in it.

The singer, 52, appeared on Lorraine via video link from her home in Los Angeles where she filled the host in on everything to do with her new music and her Christmas special.

In it, she wears an incredible gold beaded Dolce and Gabbana dress with a large train, spectacularly spread out around her feet in a circle as she sings – but looking that show-stopping is seriously hard work.

She told Lorraine Kelly: ‘You want to laugh? The dress itself took, it required – you’ll see in the special if you watch it – it took six grown men to carry the train of that dress to get me down the stairs.

‘It weighed like 60 or 70 pounds that dress because of the beading.’

Lorraine joked that she imagined Mariah dressed like that ‘all the time’ and always had six men helping her get around.

Tapping into her diva reputation, Mariah laughed: ‘Thereabouts! Sometimes there’s five, sometimes there’s six, it depends on the amount of beading!’

Given that she is the queen of Christmas, it’s no surprise her hit All I Want For Christmas has returned to the charts once again, 27 years after its release.

She has released a new song, Fall In Love At Christmas with Khalid and Kirk Franklin, but assured fans she was not competing with her classic festive track.

‘I’m not trying to be like “Oh I’m competing with All I Want,” it’s not a competition, it’s just a different style of song.

‘It’s a love song and it’s a spiritual moment and I think for where we are in the world, it’s really, really right, timing-wise.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
