‘Mayweather Was Never a Star Coming Through’: Eddie Hearn Compares Floyd Mayweather With Devin Haney

After 26 professional fights, 23-year-old Devin Haney is on a similar scale with ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd Mayweather. ‘The Dream” has a better knockout ratio than ‘Money’ at the same time. Despite being compared to an elite, Haney is yet not the most marketable fighter and has struggled to earn the biggest fights.

However, Haney’s promoter Eddie Hearn is optimistic about the WBC champion’s future. In a recent chat with iFL TV, Hearn detailed how Haney can sample Floyd Mayweather‘s early career to craft his own success journey. He also expressed his belief in ‘The Dream’ ahead of his title defense against Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz.

Eddie Hearn said, “Devin [Haney] still needs that break-out moment. He is not a massive star yet. He is a star with a lot of potential. But these are the kind of fights, these are the kind of performances like Mayweather. [Floyd] Mayweather was never a star coming through. Because he was really good and no one really wanted to box him.”

“He had to take chances. Sometimes probably had to take the money that he didn’t think was fair. But he believed in himself and he produced special moments when it was asked of him. And that’s a special fighter, and that’s what we’re calling on tomorrow night from Devin Haney.”

Is Devin Haney close to a blockbuster fight?

Joseph Diaz is clearly a top-rated opponent and will enrich Haney’s boxing legacy. However, Diaz doesn’t bring in mainstream attention and the most lucrative payday. So, Devin Haney‘s hunt won’t stop after facing ‘JoJo’ Diaz. If he bags a win this weekend, we can expect ‘The Dream’ to go for a unification match.

While several lightweight champions have avoided a scrap against him, newly crowned champion George Kambosos Jr. has agreed to battle Haney. They have even planned to host it at Kambosos Jr’s home country, Australia.
