Who Is Joseph Diaz Sr.?

If not for his father, Joseph Diaz Jr. could have missed being a world champion pugilist. ‘JoJo’ intended to become a baseball player when he was a child. It was then his father, Joseph Diaz Sr, accompanied him to the boxing gym. The primary motive was to hone his son in defense and rescue him from bullies.

Joseph Diaz Jr. was put in the ring to learn to defend. However, he became extremely skillful at the gym and looked impressive. That’s when the gym administrators took him as a full-timer. And today, ‘JoJo’ is close to becoming a two-division world titlist.

Joseph Diaz Sr. has been one of the prime support behind his son’s success. When ‘JoJo’ was merely 10 or 11, his father accompanied him to the South El Monte Teamsters Youth Boxing Club in California. Everything changed since then. In a chat with ESPN, Joseph Diaz Sr. had discussed the bond he shares with his son, which was quite mesmerizing for the boxing fam.

Joseph Diaz Sr. said, “He ended up sparring a couple kids, and one kid he sparred, he made him bleed and stuff like that. After that, he got hooked. It kind of backfired on me a little bit.

“I thought he would go in there and get beat up a little bit and not want to do this [too seriously] and just want to go in there and train. But he ended up making some kids bleed and beat some kids up.”

No wonder his intentions and caliber, have fetched him a custom WBC title for his training skills, which he received alongside his son and grandson.
