You Don’t Know Me viewers already blindsided after shock twist in episode 1

New drama You Don’t Know Me got off to a very strong start on BBC One on Sunday, after viewers were left blindsided after a shock twist. 

The first episode focused on Hero (the impressive Samuel Adewunmi) who was in court on the charge of murdering a local drug dealer – and took the unconventional approach of firing his defence lawyer to deliver a closing statement. 

Addressing the jury, he pleaded his innocence and recounted the story of his meeting the mysterious Kyra (Sophie Wilde). 

As he recalled, they fell in love together and began a new life as a couple. 

However, after a stranger came to the door one day, she vanished and left Hero scouring the streets trying to find her. 

Then, there came a shocking twist which left viewers reeling following a desperate search.

After receiving a tip off from a friend, Hero headed to north London where he saw Kyra getting into a car late at night – with the scenes implying that she was now working as a prostitute. 

The moment took many viewers totally by surprise, with one writing on Twitter: ‘What a plot twist.’

‘Didn’t see that coming,’ another added.

Viewers will have to tune into Monday’s episode to follow the case.

The new programme is adapted by Tom Edge, the screenwriter who worked on the hit BBC drama Vigil earlier this year.

The synopsis reads: ‘A young man from London stands in court, accused of murder. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he swears he’s innocent. But in the end, all that matters is… does the jury believe him?’

The series is based on a book of the same name from criminal defence barrister Imran Mahmood.

The novel was first released in 2017 and was influenced by the experiences Imran had while defending young men during his legal career.
