David Letterman couldn’t help but take a swipe at Donald Trump as he took to the stage at the Kennedy Center Honors.
The comedian was among the stars performing at the annual fundraiser, and wasted no time in mocking the former US president, who famously refused to attend the event during his time in office.
Celebrating Joe Biden and wife Jill’s appearance in the audience, he told the applauding crowd – via the MailOnline – in his opening remarks: ‘Tonight it is quite nice, very nice, to see the presidential box once again being occupied.
‘The same with the Oval Office.’
Biden’s appearance at the Honors, which was filmed on Sunday, marks the first time in four years that a sitting president has attended the bash.
Trump turned his back on the event after he was condemned by the honorees, some of whom threatened to boycott if he attended.

He skipped three ceremonies, with wife Melania also choosing not to attend in his absence.
Biden found himself as the butt of some jokes at the ceremony, due to the ‘Sleepy Joe’ nickname that the former president gave him throughout the recent election.
Michael Che told the crowd: ‘It’s a bit intimidating to do jokes in front of President Joe Biden.
‘Come on, there’s no way he’s still awake right now.’
He definitely was wide awake, and clapped appreciatively at the quip.

The Honors comes after Trump dropped a hint that he could run for president once again, more than a year after he lost the election.
In a Thanksgiving statement shared at the end of last month, the former leader suggested that it was a ‘very interesting time’ for the country, explaining: ‘But don’t worry, we will be great again – and we will all do it together.’
‘America will never fail, and we will never allow it to go in the wrong direction,’ he penned.
‘Too many generations of greatness are counting on us. Enjoy your Thanksgiving knowing that a wonderful future lies ahead!’

During a wide-ranging interview with Nigel Farage on GB News, he also stated that he had ‘no choice’ but to run again.
When asked if he would consider jumping back into US politics, the Apprentice star replied: ‘If you love the country you have no choice – it’s not a question.
‘I love our country. I brought the country to a level it’s never seen before.’
However, he has yet to announce a formal challenge to President Biden.
The Kennedy Center Honors will air on CBS on December 22.
