Line of Duty’s Jed Mercurio trolls Boris Johnson over that police outfit photo

Line of Duty’s Jed Mercurio has trolled Boris Johnson after he was pictured in a full police uniform – and we have a hunch he won’t be joining AC-12 any time soon.

Jed, who has been outspoken on the Prime Minister on social media over the years, was reacting to the latest photo opportunity which saw the PM dress in police attire.

Mr Johnson wore a police hat and jacket as he observed a dawn drugs raid on a house in Liverpool by Merseyside Police on Monday, as he laid out a 10-year strategy to tackle drug-related offences.

He might have resembled a member of AC-12 in the new picture, but Line of Duty creator Jed was far from impressed with his new look.

The 55-year-old wasted no time in hitting out at Mr Johnson on Twitter, criticising his ‘audition’ for a role in the hit BBC show.

He wrote: ‘Thank you for submitting your audition for the next series of #LineofDuty but we’re looking for a character with at least one redeeming moral principle and a performance that places even just a scintilla of doubt in the audience’s mind that he might not be totally bent.’

It’s not the first time that Jed has hit out at the politician.

In fact, his criticism in the past led fans of Line of Duty to speculated that former Detective Superintendent Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) may have been based on him, with former Labour Party spokesperson Alastair Campbell also chiming in on the conversation after the series six earlier this year.

After watching the final episode, some viewers tweeted their belief that the Line of Duty creator may have taken inspiration from Mr Johnson for Buckells, with several of the posts being retweeted by World Productions, the company that makes the crime drama.

Presenter and political strategist Alastair also tweeted: ‘“How some people can fail upwards beggars belief” – the best @jed_mercurio troll of @BorisJohnson yet #LineOfDuty.’

The show’s sixth series came to a dramatic conclusion earlier this year, with AC-12’s anti-corruption unit uncovering Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) as the identity of ‘H’ aka The Fourth Man.

Line of Duty fans are desperate for news on whether they might get a series 7, and there seems to be a promising update.

It’s been reported there could be a series seven to come of the BAFTA-award winning drama. Only, don’t expect the Prime Minister to be involved any time soon…

Line of Duty is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
