The Walking Dead: World Beyond looks to have revealed the origin of the zombie apocalypse.

The two-season spin-off series came to an end on Sunday night and a post credit scene may have turned the whole franchise on its head with a massive bombshell entirely unrelated to World Beyond itself.

Although the comic book’s creator and writer Robert Kirman vowed to never reveal the actual source of the apocalypse, the TV series seems ready to offer some deeper insight.

The post credit scene is set in deserted French lab in France, complete with graffiti which, when translated into English, reads: ‘The Dead Were Born Here’.

We then meet a woman who watches an old video transmission from CDC virologist Dr. Edwin Jenner (played by Noa Emmerich), who last appeared in The Walking Dead season one finale.

She gets interrupted by a mysterious gunman, who asks her if she’s a ‘member of the Primrose’ team – it turns out the answer’s no, she’s with ‘Violet’.

Asked about Primrose, the woman – who we now know to be a doctor – responds: ‘They weren’t here when it happened. When you all did what you did. They were at the conference. In Toledo.’

She reveals that by Toledo, she means the city in Ohio, rather than Spain, and she adds that she ‘hoped against hope that they were here’.

Asked why she came back herself, she adds: ‘I was tired of running. And I had that hope against hope. And I had to try. If they were to return here…to their work. They might end all this… even after all this time.’

The gunman responds: ‘They should be dead. If they aren’t… and they somehow come back like you… we won’t jail them like the others. We’ll kill them.

‘End this? You started this. All the teams. Then… you made it worse.’

She doesn’t dispute any of his claims, which suggests the teams of French doxtors were behind the zombie virus.

There’s more though, as the post credit scene also shows that the zombie virus has mutated after the doctor gets shot by the gunman, and within seconds she’s reanimated.

The zombie races to the door at a speed we’ve never seen before, and immediately tries to claw its way out to avenge its death as it shows a new level of strength and savagery.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
